Obituary for Arthur B. Troup Jr.

Arthur B. Troup Jr.
Arthur B. Troup, Jr., PhD – Father, Teacher, Soldier, Pilot. On March 12, 2018, after living life fully, Art conceded “it was all used up” and quoting favorite author Pat McManus, “joined the multitude”.

He is survived by six children: Chuck Troup, Tom Troup (Gloria Troup-Foley), Catherine LaPenta (Tom), Martha Troup-Mayforth (Pete), Rob Troup (Lesley) and Amy Mountz (Daryl); nine grandchildren; Elizabeth Tedrick (Ty), Tyler Mayforth, Dante LaPenta (Amanda), Zach LaPenta, Kyle Troup, Trevor Troup, Hunter Troup, Riley Troup and Jonathan Troup and four great-grandchildren; Carmine LaPenta, Camille LaPenta, Jack Tedrick and Ava Tedrick, and by his half-sister Eleanor Troup of Atlanta who he was blessed to meet in his later years. Also surviving is Art’s caring friend and former wife Marge Troup of Florida.

Art was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1930. Art grew up reveling in the central Pennsylvania countryside, spending time with his grandfather “dynamiting things”, an activity he enjoyed into adulthood, and searching the sky for clouds and constellations. As a young boy he dreamed of flying, ultimately becoming a pilot for the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, 28th Infantry Division where he flew both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. He spent 20 years “owning the sky” with the Guard, achieving the rank of Captain, and ultimately being awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for piloting flood rescue helicopters during the treacherous conditions of Hurricane Agnes. In addition to the rescue work, his mission included flying vital cargo of tetanus and typhoid serums and transporting medical personnel.

Art graduated with degrees from Wake Forest University and the University of Pittsburgh, subsequently culminating his educational efforts with a PhD in Psychology. He was certified in 5 disciplines, including English, Spanish and Biology, teaching first at Carson Long Military Academy and then Hamburg High School. Many former students remember Art as a fair teacher, always saying he gave at least a “C”, even if they deserved a “D”.

Art was a true renaissance man, knowing a great many things about a great many things. In addition to pilot, soldier, and teacher, he was a published author, gunsmith, woodworker, ornithologist, artist, award winning marksman, skier, scuba diver, wind turbine pioneer, philosopher, hunter, fisherman and traveler, most often to his beloved Scottish Highlands. Art lived his life “well and often”. His children are most appreciative to the staff and patrons of the Hamburg “Third Street Café” for their humor, generosity of heart and sense of community provided to him in his final years. And we offer a special thank you for Sandy Bush, his helper during these last weeks. We are truly grateful for all you are and all you did.

Visitation and a Memorial Service will be held at Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc. 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg, PA on Saturday March 24, 2018. Visitation will be from 1:00-1:30 PM with Memorial Service to begin at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Operation Smile, a charitable organization which Art supported for many years, devoted to cleft palate repair for children,
