Vernon A. “Duke” Deysher, Jr.
Well Known Area Drummer
Vernon A. “Duke” Deysher, Jr., 90, of Upper Bern Twp., and formerly of Reading, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2017, of natural causes in the Orwigsburg Center.
His wife, Florence V. (nee’ Kulp) Deysher, died October 21, 2015.
Born April 8, 1927, in West Reading, he was a son of the late Vernon A. Deysher, Sr., and Ethel (nee’ Hopler) Deysher.
A 1945 graduate of Reading High School, he had served in the US Navy during WWII. Duke has worked as a photo engraver for the Reading Eagle Co., for 46 years retiring in 1989.
A well known percussionist of the area, he served with the Eighth Fleet Flagship Navy Band aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB 42) for 2 years. He was a charter member of the Reading Pops, was Hen Hoffman’s Cadet Band drummer, played with the Civic Opera Orchestra for many years in the Rajah Theater. Duke played with the Pit Orchestra in the Rajah and Park Theaters, and taught privately. He was President of Locals 135-211 American Federation of Musicians for 36 years, and served on the International Musician committee.
He is survived by his children: Dennis V. Deysher and Vicki S. Deysher, both of Upper Bern Twp., and Lori A. Deysher, fiance’ of Dieter Czerny, Lower Alsace Twp.; and his grandchildren: Lynee E. Reedy and Thatcher D. Ninzeheltzer.
He was predeceased by his siblings: Robert H. Deysher and Arlene Beverage.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 3, 2017, at 11 AM from the Leibensperger Funeral Home, Inc., 65 S. 4th St., Hamburg (off-street parking in rear). Relatives and friends may call Friday from 9:30 am until time of service at the funeral home. Burial in Forest Hills Memorial Park, will be private.
