Obituary for Lillian Mengel (Kunkle)

Lillian  Mengel (Kunkle)
Lillian K. Mengel, 94, of Kutztown, died Sunday, May 20, 2018 in Lehigh Valley Hospital- Cedar Crest. She was the wife of the late Clarence T. Mengel, died March 2, 1971. She was the companion of Leroy Schollenberger, died 1990.
Born in Greenwich Twp., she was the daughter of the late Lewis W. and Annie B. (Miller) Kunkle. She attended the Schucker's One Room School House. She was a lifelong member of Frieden's Lutheran Church, Stony Run. Lillian held different jobs, but recognized herself mostly as a farmer on the family farm. Lillian would help her father with the horses in the field. She was a member of the church bowling league, a 20 year active member of the Women's Drei County Dutch Fersommeling, and was an active member of the Virginville Grange. At the Grange, she was a member of 54 years, serving as chaplain for 8 years, and a lector, she volunteered for banquets, wedding receptions, bazaars, folk festivals, and more. She was also a member of the State and National Grange. Lillian was also a member of the Kutztown Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and was famous for her funnel cakes at fairs, the folk festival, and church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, vegetables, and crafting. She would embroider for her family, friends, to be used as gifts, or to enter into the Fair and Grange competitions. She was notorious for her Blue Ribbon and Grand Prize winning baked goods, crafts, home grown flowers, home grown vegetables, doilies, pillows and more. She frequently called into Uncle Jeffrey (WTAP), Feedback (WEEU), and she made a folk festival appearance with Ed Hannah.
Lillian is survived by a son: Richard C. Mengel companion of Ruth, Lenhartsville; a daughter: Darlene L. (Mengel) wife of Daniel A. Kurtz, Kutztown; five grandchildren: Barry husband of Dawn (Heiter) Mengel, Brian husband of Holly (Sullivan) Mengel, Brenda (Mengel) wife of Ronald Bogert, Jason husband of Tara (Spengler) Kurtz, and Kellene (Kurtz) wife of John Knutsen; 15 great-grandchildren: Joseph, Corissa, Amelia, Erica, Kyle, Tyler, Cody, Elliot, Weston, Alhana, Naomi, Cyrus, Elliana, Alivya, Shiphrah; and ten great-great-grandchildren: Braylond, Jordyn, Blake, Tanner, Levi, Isaac, Kimber, Logan, Caleb, and one on the way. She was predecased by a dauther: Joan Mengel; a daughter-in-law: Christine M. (Gruber) Mengel; and her siblings: Harold Kunkle, Clarence Kunkle, Mildred (Kunkle) Wessner, Velma (Kunkle) Snyder, Dorothy (Kunkle) Hoffman, Miriam (Kunkle) Held, Marvin Kunkle, Eleanor (Kunkle) Hill, and Florence (Kunkle) Dietrich.
Services will be held Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 11:00 am from Frieden's Lutheran Church, 9727 Red Road, Kempton, PA 19529. Burial will follow in Zion's Cemetery, Windsor Twp. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 am in the church.
