Joseph L. "Joe"  Gerner
Joseph L. Gerner, 72, of Tilden Twp., passed away peacefully in his residence on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Brenda K. (Shollenberger) Gerner. They were married on August 26, 1978 and celebrated thirty-nine years of marriage.
Born in Hamburg, he was the son of the late James E. and Mabel V. (Fox) Gerner. Joe graduated from Hamburg High School in 1964. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. Joe worked for Pennsylvania Steel, Hamburg, for over twenty years; and then worked for East Penn Manufacturing for thirteen years, retiring in 2014. He last worked part-time for Steve Moyer Subaru. Joe was a member of Zion's Church, Windsor Castle. He was also a member of Vaux Lodge #406 F. & A.M., Hamburg; Loyal Order of Moose, Hamburg; Shartlesville Fire Company; and Hamburg Game Association. He enjoyed watching Philly sports and NASCAR. Joe's family and friends were an important part of his life. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren. Joe will be missed by his canine companions: Lacey and Addie.
Surviving in addition to his wife is one daughter: Tonya Jo (Gerner), wife of Matthew Salkowski, Kutztown; and two grandchildren: Laney Jo and Sawyer. Joe is also survived by four brothers: James E. Gerner, Jr.; Gene F. Gerner; Thomas A. Gerner; and Gerald E. Gerner;
and one sister: Janice C. VanEtten; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother: Richard W. Gerner; and two sisters: Rosalie A. Bowers; and Sharon R. Ross.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 7:30 pm from Zion's Church, 770 Zion's Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A visitation with the family will be held in the church Tuesday 5:30-7:30 pm. Casual attire is encouraged. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Zion's Church at the above address. Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Hamburg is in charge of arrangements.
