Obituary for John L. Houser

John L. Houser, 78, of Penn Twp., passed away on Friday, February 13, 2015 in St. Joseph Medical Center. He was the husband of Nancy A. (Steixner) Houser. They were married on November 20, 1977 and celebrated thirty-seven years of marriage.
Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late Franklin and Sarah (Singley) Houser. He graduated from Beaver High School, Schuylkill Co.; and received a bachelor of arts degree in History from Lycoming College. John was the volunteer resource coordinator for Wernersville State Hospital for twenty-five years retiring in 1998. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America; and an Eagle Scout. While in California, John was a Scout executive and served in many different capacities with the local Boy Scouts of America Council. He was an administrator for the YMCA in Schuylkill County; member of Governor Joseph Hiester Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution; and one of the first members of the First Defenders Civil War Round Table of Berks County. John was a member of the Berks County Cycling Club and its Senior Spokes group; and a member of the Sierra Club. He volunteered at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and Blue Marsh. John enjoyed snow skiing and traveling.
Surviving in addition to his wife is one son: Matthew F. Houser, and his wife Mary, Exton; and three grandchildren: Jacob, Alexander and Lauren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday at 10:30 am from Bern Evangelical Lutheran Church, 820 West Leesport Road, Leesport. A visitation with the family will be held in the church from 9:30 to 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of one's choice.
