Obituary for Ella M. Engel (Miller)
Ella M. Engel, 83, of Bern Twp., passed away on Friday, September 7, 2018 in Berks Heim. She was the wife of Karl J.A. Engel. They were married on April 13, 1957 and celebrated sixty-one years of marriage.
Born in Perry Twp., she was the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Verna A. (Adam) Miller. Ella was a 1953 graduate of Perry High School and graduated from Albright College in 1958, where she was a member of Pi Alpha Tau sorority. She was a home economics teacher at Owen J. Roberts High School before becoming a mother and full time homemaker. Ella was a member of the former Trinity United Church of Christ, Leesport; and a member of Ontelaunee Grange #1617.
Ella enjoyed cooking, crafts, was a talented quilter and sewer, and a meticulous painter. She also enjoyed gardening, growing and canning snow peas, carrots, and various other vegetables. Ella made the original King Frost costume as worn in the annual parade in Hamburg. As her children were young, she was involved with the PTA at school, a den mother for the Cub Scouts, and instrumental in starting the Calvacade of Bands. Ella was known for her sense of humor and her mischievous nature. Above all, she loved her children, especially her grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her three sons: Peter K. Engel, and his wife Lisa Bos, Lansdowne; Thomas K. Engel, and his wife Tricia, Windsor Twp.; and Paul A. Engel, and his companion Beverly Leviner, Bern Twp.; five grandchildren: Molly, Alison, Karl, Tabitha and Jacob. Ella is also survived by one sister: Marie A. (Miller), widow of Harold Strause, Perry Twp. She was predeceased by two brothers: Arthur P. and Richard G. Miller.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 20 at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport. A visitation with the family will be held in the funeral home Thursday, September 20 10:00 to 11:00 am.
