Obituary for Dorothy P. Sonday (Hein)

Dorothy P. Sonday, 94, formerly of Shoemakersville, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2014 in the Berks Heim, where she resided since February 2012.
Dorothy was the daughter of the late Oscar Hein and Lizzie V. (Schappell) Shappell. From the age of 2, she was raised by her uncle and aunt, James and Mary Hein. Dorothy worked for the Globe Underwear Company, Shoemakersville, until her retirement. She was a member of Zion's Church, Perry Twp., where she was a former member of the Women's Guild. Dorothy was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shoemakersville Fire Company. She was a very caring person and enjoyed working at the Kutztown Folk Festival. Dorothy was known to be a practical joker; but was especially known for her famous graham cracker custard pies at the holidays.
Dorothy is survived by two daughters: Faye E. (Sonday), widow of Donald I. Smith, Perry Twp.; and Beverly A. Sonday-Vandervort, companion of Stephen Heller, Wyomissing; three granddaughters: Karen (Smith), wife of Norman Manbeck; Kimberly (Smith), wife of Russell Olszewski; and Patricia (Smith), wife of Luke Phillips; seven great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a seventh is expected in January. She is also survived by two sisters: Marie (Hein) Faust, in Ohio; and Betty J. (Shappell) Wolfe, Maidencreek Twp. Dorothy was predeceased by her companion: Elton Merkel; and two brothers: Earl and Francis Hein.
Dorothy's family would like the thank the nurses and staff of B-3 at Berks Heim for the care given to her.
Services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am from Zion's Church, 770 Zion's Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. Burial will follow in Zion's Cemetery, Perry Twp. A viewing will be held in the church on Friday 10:00 to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Zion's Church Memorial Fund, at the above address.
