Alean L.  Tray (Kress)
Alean L. Tray, 85, of Hamburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2018 in Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest, with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of Gerald J. Tray, who died June 22, 2017. Alean and Gerald were married on May 15, 1954.

Alean was born in Hamburg on March 10, 1932 to the late Frederick G. and Helen S. (Schaeffer) Kress. She was born and raised in the same house on North Fourth Street. She graduated from Hamburg High School in 1950 and attended Reading Hospital School of Nursing. While in high school, Alean was a cheerleader and member of the girls basketball team, having an undefeated season and winning the county championship. Alean worked for Hamburg Knitting Mill and Delta Truck Body. She and her husband also owned and operated G.J. Tray Wholesale Foods in Hamburg beginning in 1966.

Alean was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Tilden Twp. She was a volunteer bookkeeper and member of the Women’s Altar Society. Alean was a former trustee of the Hamburg Public Library, active volunteer and Friend of the Library. She was a member of the Hamburg Historical Society; the Historical Society of Berks County, where she was a former second vice president and former chaplain; a member of the Hamburg Sports Boosters; a former assistant Girl Scout leader; and delivered Meals On Wheels. Alean was a champion bowler and member of numerous bowling leagues.

Alean enjoyed traveling with the senior citizens; playing her 5-pedal piano, reading, gardening, and going to Curves. She was a wonderful cook, made great bagels and won numerous baking contests. Alean loved her family and was always there for anyone in need.

Alean is survived by her children: Gerald W. Tray, and his companion, Mary Beth Marolo, Hazleton; Christopher J. Tray, and his companion Diane Bauman, Quakertown; Beverly (Tray), wife of Tom Etchberger, in Virginia; and Diana (Tray), wife of Frank Twaddle, Exeter Twp.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephew. She was predeceased by a sister: Pauline D. (Kress) Kline.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:00 am from St. Mary R.C. Church, 94 Walnut Road, Hamburg. Burial will follow in Zion Red Church Cemetery, Orwigsburg. A viewing will be held on Monday 6:00 to 8:00 pm from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg and at the church on Tuesday 10:00 to 10:45 am.
