Ella Mae Levan, 88, of Perry Twp., passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016 in her residence. She was the wife of Irwin G. Levan. They were married on September 9, 1950 and celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Born in Perry Twp. on May 25, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Jacob C. and Mary Ellen (Rothermel) Hoffman. Ella Mae graduated from Perry High School in 1945; graduated from Temple University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree; and received her Master's degree in Reading from Kutztown University. She was employed as an elementary teacher and reading specialist in the Hamburg Area School District, teaching at Perry, Third Street, and Tilden Elementary Schools, for twenty-eight years, retiring in 1989. Ella Mae was a life-long member of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Perry Twp., where through the years she sang on the choir, taught Sunday School, and served on church council and various committees. She was also a member of the Shoemakersville Area Senior Citizens serving as the chairperson of its Christmas Bazaar; and bowled in the senior bowling league at Hoffman's Lanes, Hamburg. Irwin and Ella Mae enjoyed ballroom dancing for many years and were members of the Smoothies and Latin Satin Dance Clubs. They also traveled throughout the United States and abroad.
Surviving in addition to her husband is one daughter: Gayle K. (Levan), wife of David Sincavage, Richmond Twp.; two granddaughters: Erin J. Hawk, Fleetwood and Jessica K. Queenan, wife of Michael, Phoenixville; three great-grandchildren: Kai and Reece Hawk, and Briea Queenan; and a step-great-grandson: Julian Queenan.
Services will be held on Thursday at 11:30 am from Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 354 Zion's Church Road, Shoemakersville, PA 19555. Burial will be in Berks Garden Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held at Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport on Wednesday 7:00 to 9:00 pm and at the church Thursday 10:30 to 11:30 am. Memorial contributions may be sent to the church at the above address. Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
