Obituary for Miles E. Wengert

Miles Edgar Wengert, "Mike", The Shoe Man, 88, of Hamburg, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2015 in the Laurel Center, Tilden Twp., after suffering a stroke. He was the son of the late Edgar M. and Mary Geneva (Althouse) Wengert.

Born in the house on Second Street in Hamburg, where he lived his entire life, he has seen quite a series of changes of faces in the Second Street gang who helped each other enormously. Miles has been especially grateful for his neighbor and routine caretaker, Carol Van Etten, and Ray and Lori and others.

Miles served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an airplane mechanic, Plane Captain at Pomona Atlantic City Air Station, where he serviced F4U Corsairs (wings up) and F6S Hellcats (wings folded back). He then went to Shoe Repair School, and besides serving local people for thirty-five years at Wengert's Shoe Repair, he was a treasured stop for through hikers on the Appalachian Trail. From the 1982 Bootleg Guide for hikers on the A.T.: "In Hamburg is Mike Wengert, an excellent cooperative cobbler. Rumor has it that Mike is Buddha in disguise." In a 1984 hiking guide, Miles was mentioned as the shoe cobbler who 'sends his elves out each night to sharpen the rocks on the A.T.'" Some of his tools and memorabilia have been given to the Appalachian Trail Museum, Pine Grove Furnance State Park, PA. The majority will remain with the Hamburg Historical Museum, State Street.

Miles was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Hamburg, where he was a former church board member. He was also a member of Union Fire Co. and beneficial association of Hamburg; Hamburg Senior Citizens, and a life member of Lenhartsville Fish and Game Association; Keystone Trails Association; Appalachian Trail Conference; National Rifle Association; and Behler-Hein Post #637 American Legion, Hamburg.

Miles is survived by one niece: Karen (Wengert) Braucher, Mohrsville; and two nephews: M. William Wengert, Green River, Wyoming; and Norman E. Wengert, Williamsport. He was predeceased by two brothers: Norman A. Wengert and Marvin W. Wengert.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 10:30 am from Bethany United Methodist Church, 321 Island Street, Hamburg. Burial will follow in Salem-Berne U.B. Cemetery, Tilden Twp. A viewing will be held in the church Saturday 9:30 to 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Bethany United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 325, Hamburg, PA 19526; Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, 1700 Hawk Mountain Road, Kempton, PA 19529; or Appalachian Trail Conservancy, 4 E. 1st Street, Boiling Springs, PA 17007.
