Obituary

Wellington R. Ketner, 91, of Tilden Twp., died Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 4:55 am in his residence. His wife, Janet W. (Wanamaker) Ketner, died January 28, 2007.

Born in Tilden Twp., he was the son of the late Wellington R. and Marie (Spangler) Ketner. He was a 1937 graduate of Hamburg High School. Wellington was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He went oversees in March 1944 and served with a truck company in the European Theatre of Operations until November 1945. He participated in the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach at Normandy, France. Wellington was sent to Korea in May 1952 and was there for nine months. In April 1953, he was named commander of the Hamburg National Guard Unit until he retired in 1980. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the French Croix DeGuerre with Palm.

Wellington was employed as a wildlife conservation officer by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and was involved in the purchase of farms for incorporation into State Gamelands near Blue Marsh Lake. He retired from the commission after 26 years of service.

Wellington was a member of the board of supervisors of Tilden Township for many years. He was a member of the Berks County Conservation District and served as chairman for several years. He received the Ann Rudd Saxman Conservation Volunteer Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts in July 2000.

Wellington is survived by one son: W. Raymond Ketner, Mechanicsburg; four daughters: Mary J. Ketner, Tilden Twp.; Carol J. (Ketner), wife of Raymond Roberts, Rockland Twp.; Patricia L. (Ketner), wife of Richard Bates, Robesonia; and Pamela L. (Ketner), wife of Bradley Hehr, Upper Bern Twp.; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by two sisters: Ellen Parsons and Esther Schappell.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 pm from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg (off street parking in rear) with Rev. Willard J. Uhler, Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. A visitation with the family will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
