Walter A. "Poppy" Spatz, Jr., 86, of Centre Twp., died Wednesday, March 25, 2015 in St. Joseph Medical Center. He was the husband of Carolyn A. (Rahn) Spatz, died May 4, 1994.
Born in Penn Twp., he was the son of the late Walter A., Sr. and Mae L. (Balthaser) Spatz. He was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, Leesport, where he was a former member of church council. Walter worked as an operating engineer for many years. He first worked for N.H. Garman for 10 years as a superintendent, then William H. Sweitzer & Son, and finally Windsor Service for 7 years before his retirement in 1993. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 542 for 38 years. Walter and his wife had 49 foster children in the course of 20 years, through Concern Foster Agency, Fleetwood. He was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, Leesport, where he was a former member of church council. Walter was a life member of Union Fire Co. No. 1 of Leesport, and the Schuylkill Valley Ambulance Association; a past president of Shoemakersville-Leesport Rotary Club; and a 32nd Degree Mason of St. John's Lodge No. 435 F & A.M., West Reading. He was also a member of Rajah Shrine, Central Berks Lions Club, and a former member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 141, Leesport. Walter served as mayor of Leesport for 10 years, and was a former member of Leesport Borough Council. He was presented with a certificate from Ontelaunee Grange. Walter also spent some time delivering Meals on Wheels.
Walter is survived by three sons: Brian L., husband of Sharon (Wagner) Spatz, Perry Twp.; Mjr. Michael McTeague, husband of Erin McTeague, Kansas; and Richard Vetter, Hamilton Twp., NJ; a daughter: Susan K. (Spatz), wife of Dennis S. Biehl, Temple; thirteen grandchildren: Brenda Hein, Kimberly Christman, Timothy Spatz, Wendy Eschbach, Diana Biehl, Thomas Spatz, David Biehl, Rebecca Daubert, Derek Spatz, Stephanie Lott, Tyler McTeague, Loeghan McTeague, and James Waits; and ten great-grandchildren: Emma, Bradley, Zachary, Cole, Jennifer, Sidney, Bentley, Addison, Paige, and Jake. Walter is also survived by a brother: Harold, husband of Barbara Spatz, Centre Twp.; a sister: Glenna (Spatz), widow of Rae Hix, Upper Bern Twp.; and a daughter-in-law: Barbara (Fehnel) Spatz, Laureldale. He was predeceased by a son: Bruce A. Spatz, and a brother William Spatz.
Services will be held Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 4:00 P.M. from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport. A viewing will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
