Ruth C. Mengel, 94, formerly of Hamburg, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023 in Keystone Villa, Blandon, where she resided. She was the wife of Ralph L. Mengel, who died January 8, 2019.
Born in West Reading, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Helen (Larkins) Fahnauer. Ruth was a 1946 graduate of Reading High School. She worked for Price Battery, Hamburg, for fifteen years, retiring in 1982. Ruth was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hamburg, where she was a former Sunday school, Bible school and weekday church school teacher. In the 1960's, she was president of the Hamburg Recreation Board Auxiliary. They sponsored talent shows, bake sales and sandwich sales to aid the Hamburg Park and Swimming Pool. Ruth's hobbies were swimming, gardening, oil painting and baking. She was previously a Cub Scout Den Mother.
Ruth is survived by her children: Randall C. Mengel, husband of Lori (Schantzenbach), Hamburg; Rachelle L. (Mengel), wife of Dean L. Shollenberger, Harleysville; and Rafe C. Mengel, husband of Mary Ann (Bachman), Windsor Twp.; seven grandchildren: Melissa Mengel, Nathan Mengel, Justin Mengel, fiance of Thomas Farmer, Amy (Shollenberger), wife of Jacob Garges, Austin Shollenberger, husband of Laura, Marlee (Mengel), wife of Emil Vakar and Rayna Mengel, fiance of Thomas DeVaney; and eight great-grandchildren: Tayler and Eva Garges, Eric and Grace Shollenberger, Reece and Hudson Mengel, Adela and Annabelle Vakar. She was predeceased by her siblings: Carl and David Fahnauer, and Marie (Fahnauer) Reiger, and Dorothy (Fahnauer) Knowles.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 10, 2023 at 2:00 pm from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. A viewing will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to: St. John's Ev.
