Obituary

Ruth K. Figard, 86, of Hamburg, died Thursday, January 2, 2014 in the Laurel Center, Tilden Twp., surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Charles R. Figard. They were married on September 9, 1950 and celebrated 63 years of marriage. Born in Royersford, Ruth was the daughter of the late Norman and Rebecca (Wanger) Kolp. She was a graduate of Royersford High School and graduated from Kutztown State Teacher's College with a degree in Secondary Education. While attending Kutztown, she played field hockey and basketball. Ruth also took courses in elementary education at the University of Hawaii, which enabled her to teach elementary school in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was a social studies and language arts teacher; teaching at Lewistown Middle School and Pottstown Elementary School. Ruth was also a substitute teacher for the Hamburg Elementary Schools. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg, where she was a member of the quilting group for many years. Ruth possessed a lot of leadership traits. She enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing and stamp collecting; and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. Surviving in addition to her husband is one daughter: Jacqueline R., wife of Mac Frazier, Granite Falls, North Carolina; four sons: Richard Todd, husband of Kathy (Boyd) Figard, Wadsworth, Ohio; Michael D., husband of Tammy (Wood) Figard, Orefield; Steven B., husband of Pamela (Hazen) Figard, Hillsborough, New Jersey; and Matthew W., husband of Linda (Blimline) Figard, Muhlenberg Twp. Ruth is also survived by twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother: Franklin Kolp, Furlong, PA. She was predeceased by a sister: Dorothy Clouden. Services will be held on Monday at 10:00 am from St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 99 Church Street, Hamburg. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. A visitation with the family will be held on Monday at the church 8:30 to 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, Texas 75265-0309, in honor of Ruth being a breast cancer survivor for thirty-three years. Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Hamburg is in charge of arrangements.
