Dr. Randall C. Mengel, OD, 73, of Hamburg, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2025 in Laurel Center. He was the husband of Lori J. (Schatzenbach) Mengel. They were married March 28, 1987 and celebrated 38 years of marriage.
Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Ralph L. and Ruth C. (Fahnauer) Mengel. He graduated from Hamburg Area High School in 1969. He continued his education at Penn State University, and completed his education at Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Philadelphia in 1975. Randy worked as a self-employed optometrist in Hamburg for almost 50 years. Randy was a former member of the Muhlenberg Lions Club, where he was a former president; former member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Krumsville, where he had served as president of the church council; and he was the Berks County Doubles Champion in Tennis in 1969. He enjoyed bowling, was an avid fan of trains, and loved classic cars. He was a longtime member of the Keystone Social Club, Hamburg and loved a wide variety of music.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter: Melissa L. Mengel, partner of Adam J. Rogers, Quincy, MA; two sons: Nathan P. Mengel, Hamburg, and Justin T. Mengel, husband of Thomas R. (Farmer) Mengel, East Stroudsburg; and two grandchildren: Reece and Hudson Mengel. He is also survived by a brother: Rafe C. Mengel, husband of Mary Ann (Bachman), Windsor Twp.; a brother in law: Dean L. Shollenberger, Harleysville; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister: Rachelle L. (Mengel) Shollenberger.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 23, 2025 at 10:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street Hamburg, PA 19526 (off-street parking in rear). Private burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. Viewings will be held Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 6 - 8 pm and Friday from 9:30 to 10:00 am in the funeral home.
