Obituary

R. Keith Broome, 73, of Fleetwood, died Monday, August 22, 2011 in the Reading Hospital where he was a patient since July 23. He is survived by his loving wife, Joanne M. (Follmer) Broome. They were married on May 4, 1958 and celebrated 53 years of marriage.

Born in Sunbury, he was the son of the late Robert E. Broome and Evelyn (Lees) Broome Stauser. He was a 1955 graduate of Northumberland High School. Keith was a U.S. Navy veteran. He worked for many years as District Manager for Capital Blue Cross in the Sunbury, Pottsville, and Reading offices. He was also a certified financial planner and owned and operated The Somerset Group. Keith was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Fleetwood. He was a former church council vice-president of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fleetwood and a charter member of Men in Mission Group at the church. Keith was an avid Rotarian, serving as past president of the Reading Rotary Club and a member and past president of the Fleetwood Rotary Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient of Rotary International.

Keith was a member of Eureka Lodge #404 F. & A.M., Northumberland; and a member of the Reading Lodge of Perfection. He was a past president of East Penn High 12 organization; a District Commissioner of Boy Scouts of America; state treasurer of the Pennsylvania Jaycees; and vice-president of Kutztown Area Chamber of Commerce. Keith was also a member of the board of trustees of Lutheran Home at Topton; board member of Lutheran Inner Mission Society; past president of Sales and Marketing Executives of Reading; and past chairman of the venture grant committee of the United Way of Berks County.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons: Pastor Steven E. Broome, and his wife, Pastor Ann Schmid, Canonsburg, PA; Roger A. Broome, and his wife Susan, Birdsboro; and Kenneth A. Broome, and his wife Linda, Linglestown; and six grandchildren: Ryan, Tyler and Marissa Broome, of Birdsboro; Rachel and Derek Broome, of Linglestown; and Wesley Schmid-Broome, of Canonsburg. Keith was predeceased by his brother: Larry Broome; and his step-father: Earl Strauser.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am from St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 5 West Arch Street, Fleetwood. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A visitation with the family will be held in the church Friday 6:00 to 8:00 pm with masonic services at 7:30 pm. A second visitation will be held in the church Saturday 10:00 to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of R. Keith Broome may be sent to Good Shepherd Home at the Conrad W. Raker Center, 8505 5th Street, Allentown, PA 18103 or St. Paul's U.C.C.
