Nevin R. Bachman, Jr., 94, formerly of Hamburg, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2015 in Peter Becker Community, Harleysville, where he resided with his wife since July 31, 2010. He was the husband of Jeannette J. (Miller) Bachman. They were married on April 13, 1941 and would have celebrated seventy-four years of marriage.
Born in Hamburg on November 4, 1920, he was the son of the late Nevin R., Sr. and Laura (Mengel) Bachman. Nevin was a 1938 graduate of Hamburg High School and received an Associate's Degree from Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute in 1947. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Nevin was in the Hamburg Army National Guard before the war began. Hamburg Company D 103rd Quartermaster Regiment became federalized and went on to Indiantown Gap. From 1941-1942, Nevin wrote a weekly column for The Hamburg Item about his company's experiences.
Nevin first worked for Textile Machine Works; and then worked as a tool and die maker for Western Electric until retiring in 1982.
Nevin was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Hamburg. He was also a member and Past Master of Vaux Lodge #406 F. & A.M., Hamburg; a member of Rajah Shrine, Tall Cedars, and Consistory. Nevin was also a former Hamburg Borough Councilman; a driver for the Hamburg Ambulance, and a former officer of IBEW Union for which he traveled extensively. He enjoyed spending time in Delaware and going on cruises.
Surviving in addition to his wife is one daughter: Doris A. (Bachman), wife of Gerald R. DeLong, Harleysville; one son: Kenneth A. Bachman, husband of Norma J. (Prutzman) Bachman, Middletown; four grandchildren: Cynthia DeLong, Laura DeLong, Kevin Bachman, and his wife Rebekah, and Erin (Bachman), wife of David Clouser; and five great-grandchildren: Aidan and Stellan Bachman; and Morgan, Carolyn and Adelaide Clouser. Nevin is also survived by two brothers: Oscar A. Bachman, a resident of Souderton Mennonite Home; and Oliver G. Bachman, Clermont, Florida. He was predeceased by two brothers: John L. Bachman and Richard A. Bachman.
Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service with military honors at St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg (please use State Street entrance) on Friday at 2:00 pm. A memorial service will also be held on Saturday at 11:30 am from the chapel at Peter Becker Community, 800 Maple Avenue, Harleysville; with a visitation from 11:00 to 11:30 am.
