Mervin Ferris Moyer, 82, of Leesport, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014 in St. Joseph Medical Center. He was the husband of Mary E. (Miller) Moyer, who died July 4, 2005.
Born in Leesport, he was the son of the late Milton M. and Stella (Keller) Moyer. Mervin was a 1952 graduate of Ontelaunee High School and Butcher school in Toledo, Ohio. He worked at Scheck's General Store in Leesport for many years before purchasing the former H.B. Kern's Butcher Shop in Leesport and running it for more than 10 years. Following the closing of the shop, he retired from custodial services at Schuylkill Valley High School. Mervin was the unofficial Leesport historian. He was an active member of the Leesport Area Historical Society; and a member of Shartlesville Fire Company and beneficial association; and the Lee Sport Hunting Lodge. Mervin was a collector of antiques and loved his horses and carriages.
Mervin is survived by one daughter: Lavina M. (Moyer), wife of Dr. Matthew Sacco, Exeter Twp.; two grandchildren: Tony and Kristy Sacco; and one sister: Avalion (Moyer), wife of Clark R. Bossler, Laureldale. He is also survived by his sister-in-laws: Sarah (Graeff) Moyer and Peggy (Miller) Hayes; brother-in-law: John Miller; special friends and caregivers: Jimmy and Judy Rauenzahn; and numerous nephews and nieces. Mervin was predeceased by two brothers: Herbert K. Moyer and LeRoy J. Stoudt.
Services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport. Burial will follow in St. John's (Gernant's) Cemetery, Ontelaunee Twp. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Tuesday 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Wednesday 10:00 to 11:00 am.
