Melvyn P.
Salzman
February 28, 1939 – May 2, 2026
Melvyn Philip Salzman, 87, of Centre Township, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.
Born in the Bronx, New York, Melvyn was the beloved son of Arthur and Miriam (Garmezy) Salzman. He was the devoted husband of Janie E. (Wrathmall) Salzman, with whom he shared a loving marriage of nearly 55 years, after marrying on June 26, 1971.
In addition to his wife, Melvyn is survived by his daughter, Amy E. (Salzman) Andrews of Dover, Delaware, wife of Brian Andrews; his son, Andrew C. Salzman of Wyomissing, husband of Tracy L. Smith-Salzman; his cherished granddaughter, Katie Elizabeth Salzman; and his brothers, Geoffrey Salzman, husband of Patricia, and Robert Salzman, nephews Bradley, Scott, and Tim Salzman, niece Corissa (Farmer) Salzman, Sister-in-law Alice Simon and nephews Keith Simon and Jack Simon.
Known affectionately as "Big Mel" from an early age, because of his commanding physical presence, he was admired for his calm strength and protective nature. Growing up in his Bronx neighborhood, Mel was often the one watching over younger children, settling disagreements before they could begin, with little more than his words and a meaningful look.
Mel graduated from Bethpage High School and continued his education at Long Island University C.W. Post Campus, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He later attended Columbia University, where he earned his Master's degree in Occupational Therapy.
A proud veteran, Mel honorably served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1966, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. Following his military service, he dedicated his professional life to public health, first with the Philadelphia County Department of Health and later with the Bucks County Department of Health. Throughout his distinguished career, he served in many important roles, including Environmental Protection Specialist, Rodent, Mosquito, and Sewage Control Officer. Mel retired in 1995 as a Supervisor with the Bucks County Department of Health.
After retirement, Mel and Janie made their home in Centre Township, Berks County, where they spent the past 32 years building friendships and enjoying life together. In retirement, Mel pursued new interests and continued to be known as someone who could always be counted on - whether lending a hand with labor, offering thoughtful advice, or simply listening with compassion.
Throughout his life Mel had many hobbies. Starting as a teenager, physical fitness, that remained a lifelong passion, would serve him well given his nick-name. Mel was also known for fishing, camping, racquetball, gardening, storytelling with his commanding voice, WWII history, vacationing with family, and Ham radio, achieving the amateur extra class level.
On May 2, 2026 the Salzman family lost their patriarch. A man that all looked up to and admired. He was always at the center of the room, the most noticeable person and the most vocal. He was not this way to boost his ego, but because he genuinely enjoyed sharing his time and energy with the people around him. He always thought of others, never himself first. A truly selfless person, you always knew if you were in his inner circle.
Mel was, and will always be, an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him. In his 87 years, he lived a full and meaningful life, grounded in service, loyalty, wisdom, and love for his family and community. He truly lived a good life.
