February 24, 1933 – January 5, 2026
Marshall L. "Marty" Smith, 92, of Bern Twp., passed away on January 5, 2026, at Penn
State Health St. Joseph Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Gloria Z. (Turner) Smith, who passed away on March 16, 2024.
Born in Bern Township on February 24, 1933, he was the son of the late Daniel W. Smith and
Mary E. (Readinger) Smith and attended Ontelaunee High School, where he was a Berks County
All-Star soccer player.
Marty retired in 1996 after 43 years with the Glen Gery Brick Company, where he also served as
president of his local union. He was deeply involved in the community, serving as president and
assistant chief of the Leesport Fire Company and was a life member. He was also a member of
the Leesport Gun Club Association and the Old Timers Basketball Association.
An avid sportsman, he coached Babe Ruth and Legion Baseball, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and
golf, and achieved a hole-in-one at Monroe Valley Golf Club. He was an active and devoted
member of Mohrsville Church of the Brethren.
Marty is survived by his daughter, Sheri Y. Smith, wife of Nasr Warour, of Wyomissing, and his
brother-in-law, Berlin A. Turner, of Spring Township. In addition to his wife, Marty was
preceded in death by his brothers, Daniel W. Smith Jr., William F. Smith, Charles H. Smith,
Robert A. Smith, and James H. Smith, and by his sisters, Dorothy E. (Smith) Miller and Mary E.
(Smith) Jones.
Services will be held February 7, 2026, at Mohrsville Church of the Brethren, 1542 Shoey Road,
Mohrsville. Visitation begins at 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at noon. In place of
flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Marty to the church at the above
address. Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Leesport, is in charge of arrangements. For online
