Mae E. Kauffman, 97, a resident of Country Meadows, Wyomissing, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 in Country Meadows. She was the widow of the late Forrest F. Kauffman, passed away November 7, 1988 and the wife of Arthur R. Thomas, Jr., a resident at Berks Heim. Mae and Arthur were married December 14, 1990 and celebrated 30 years of marriage.
Born in Tilden Twp., she was the daughter of the late Warren D. and Florence M. (Leiby) Clouser. She graduated from Hamburg High School in 1942 and was a part of the Commercial Course. She was a member of the National Honor Society while in school. As a member of the Greatest Generation Mae worked as a secretary for the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company in Baltimore, MD during World War II. She later worked as an executive secretary for many prominent leaders in the Reading Area in the insurance, legal, and banking industry, until retiring from Hamilton Bank in 1986.She was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church serving as secretary of their church council for 10 years. She volunteered many hours to the Sunday School program at Alsace through the years and also served on the Board of Alsace Cemetery. She was a 50 year member of Elizabeth Herr Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling to Florida, and playing cards.
She is survived by a son: Barry L. Kauffman, husband of Mariann E. (Arbogast), Bern Twp.; a daughter: Ann M. (Kauffman) MacPherson, wife of Geoffrey A., Leavenworth, WA; five grandchildren: Elizabeth, Thomas, David, Andrew, and Bryan; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother: Daniel M. Clouser, a resident at Maidencreek Place. In addition to her first husband, she was predeceased by a grandson: Jeffrey D. Stevens, died February 5, 1985, and a brother: Earl W. Clouser, killed in action on March 19, 1945 during the Okinawa Campaign, while serving on the USS Franklin.
