Obituary

Larry A. Werner, Sr., 89, of Sinking Spring, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 in the Reading Hospital with family by his side. He was the husband of Jean A. (Buchta) Werner. They were married on January 28, 1955 and celebrated seventy-one years of marriage.

Born in West Reading, he was the son of the late Russell "Hutty" Werner and Daisy H. (Trayer) Werner. Larry was a 1955 graduate of Governor Mifflin High School. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1959 and his Master's of Education in 1963 from Pennsylvania State University. Larry first taught at Annville-Cleona School District for three years and then taught health and physical education for thirty years at the Hamburg Area School District, Junior Senior High School, retiring in 1993. He coached for the Hamburg Area High School baseball, basketball and tennis teams, and briefly for the girls track and field. Larry was a Berks County soccer official for thirty-five years and served as a mentor to his sons as they also officiated. He was a life member of the United States Power Squadron; Commander of the Schuylkill River Power Squadron; and a member of the Reading Exchange Club. Larry was a saxophone player and singer for the Four Dukes and Sea Fever bands. He was a member of Zion's Church, Windsor Castle. Larry and his wife Jean enjoyed boating and cruises. He especially enjoyed the time spent with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his children: Debra, wife of Matthew Stine; Larry Werner, Jr., husband of Jayme; Cindy, widow of Marvin Brandstatter, Jr.; Gregory Werner, husband of Deann; and Julie, wife of William Strickler; 12 grandchildren: Dustin Folk, Dena Folk, Laura Keller, Susan Printz, Marvin Brandstatter III, Carrie-Jean Eppihimer, Deidre Werner Groh, Ashley Groff, Kala Gorman, Aaron Strickler and Rachel Strickler; 23 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great grandchildren. Larry is also survived by two brothers: Gerald T. Werner and Dennis L. Werner. He was predeceased by one granddaughter: Wendy Brandstatter; two grandsons: Matthew R. Folk and Nicholas D. Hawkins; and one brother: Russell "Tommy" Werner. Larry will be missed by his "best friend" Lizzie.

Services for Larry will be held on Friday at 10:30 am at Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Friday 9:00 to 10:30 am.
