Joyce L. Schappell, 79, of Hamburg, died Friday, March 9, 2012 in the Laurel Center, Tilden Twp., where she had been for two months. She was the wife of Mylan L. "Mike" Schappell. They were married on December 16, 1950 and celebrated 61 years of marriage.
Born in Tilden Twp., she was the daughter of the late Joel and Eva (Stein) Yeager. She worked as a folder for Merritt Underwear Company, Shoemakersville; as a supervisor for Windsor Knitting Mill, Hamburg; and last worked for Auburn Manufacturing, until retiring in 1997. Joyce was a member of Zion's Church, Windsor Castle. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shoemakersville Fire Company, Union Fire Company #1, Hamburg, and Shartlesville Fire Company and their beneficial associations.
Joyce was proud to be a breast cancer survivor. She enjoyed reading and crocheting. Throughout the years, Joyce shared her talent of crocheting lap afghans, distributing them to those in need.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son: Gery M., husband of Abby Sue (DeMoise) Schappell, Hamburg; one daughter: Sharon L. (Schappell), wife of Terry L. Weidner, Wernersville; three grandchildren: Amy Weidner, Hamburg; Lisa Weidner, and her fiance Jason Schaeffer, Robesonia; and Jonathan Schappell, and his wife Corinne, Leesport; and one great-grandson: Colin. Joyce was predeceased by two sisters: Pauline (Yeager) Hamm; and Evelyn (Yeager) Sanders Gerhart.
Services will be on Wednesday at 1:00 pm from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will be in Zion's Cemetery, Perry Twp. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Tuesday 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Wednesday 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm.
