Helen E. Walters, 100, formerly of Strausstown, passed away in Berks Heim, on Sunday, June 21, 2015, where she resided since October 2014. Helen was the wife of Eugene G. Walters, Sr., who died on July 14, 1986. They were married on March 27, 1937.
Born in Lenhartsville on November 5, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Robert F. and Lillie Alice (Peters) Miller. Helen began her working career as a full-fashion knitter for Burkey Hosiery, Hamburg. She and her husband owned and operated Smith's Dinette and a television and appliance store in Hamburg from 1946 to 1953. After moving to Strausstown, Helen was employed by The Pennsylvania Dutch Gift Haus and Roadside America until her retirement.
Helen was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg. She was a charter member and past president of the Strausstown Women's Club, The Blue Mountain Doll Society, and the United Federation of Doll Clubs. She was an accomplished seamstress, ceramic artist and an avid collector.
Helen is survived by a son: Eugene G., Jr., and his wife Charlotte Walters, Orwigsburg; and a daughter: Helen E. (Walters), and her husband Stanley Schaeffer, Bernville; and eight grandchildren: Cheryl (Schaeffer), wife of Mark Derr; Julie (Walters), wife of Ed Jones; Michael, husband of Tara Schaeffer; George, husband of Jenn Walters; Susan (Schaeffer), wife of Bruce Reaser; Matthew, husband of Melanie Walters; Rebecca (Schaeffer), wife of Scott Barnett; and John, husband of Katrina Walters. There are also twenty-three great-grandchildren: Arielle, Aidan, Aaron, and Aaric Derr; Kelyn, Kalie, and Brandon Jones; Haley, Tristin, and Ethan Schaeffer; Ryan, Aaron, Kevin and Colton Walters; Jessica and Sarah Reaser; Marie, Catherine, Matthew, and Christopher Walters; Victoria and Logan Barnett; and Kaitlyn Walters. A niece, Mary Alice Heffner who was like a daughter, as well as other nieces and nephews; and her sister-in-law Hattie (Walters) Wardman also survive her. She was predeceased by three sisters: Pauline Miller, Manetta S. (Miller) Behler, and Mary D. (Miller) Seidel.
Services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg.
