Obituary

Harold L. Spatz, Jr., 80, of Shoemakersville, died Tuesday, September 18, 2012 in the Laurel Center Tilden Twp., where he resided since August 4. He was taken there from ManorCare, Laureldale, where he was since May 31. Harold was the husband of Betty E. (Girard) Spatz. They were married on March 28, 1948 and celebrate 64 years of marriage.

Born in Shartlesville, he was the son of the late Harold L. Sr., and Florence H. (Stoudt) Spatz. Harold was a wood and metal pattern maker, working at many different pattern makers in the area. He also owned and operated Threeway Pattern, Bern Twp. Harold last worked at Hamburg Pattern Works until retiring in 1996. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Shoemakersville. Harold was a charter member and first President of the Shoemakersville Jaycees.

Harold was a master craftsman; making all of the furniture for he and his wife. He enjoyed making things for the family. Harold was known as the best wood and metal pattern maker on the East Coast. He received his certificate of apprenticeship for pattern making from the Pennsylvania Apprenticeship Council in March 1953. Harold was very proud of the fishpond at their home that he made himself. He enjoyed fishing, going to flea markets, and the annual vacations to Ocean City, Maryland. Harold's wife Betty finally got him to enjoy watching the Phillies.

Surviving in addition to his wife is one son: Bruce H., husband of Linda L. (Reeder) Spatz, Tolland, Connecticut; two daughters: Kimberly A. (Spatz), wife of James Hermansader, Shoemakersville; and Beth Ann (Spatz), wife of Mark Counterman, Shoemakersville; seven grandchildren: Steven C. and Scott G. Spatz; Nicholas J. and Molly S. Hermansader; and Zachary R., Codie A., and Brandon L. Counterman; and three great-grandsons: Cabot and Everett Spatz; and Carson Spatz. Harold is also survived by one brother: John Clair, husband of Elaine (Savage) Spatz; and two sisters: Janet F. (Spatz), wife of Richard Burkert, and Jane F. (Spatz), widow of Harvey Reidenhour, all of Hamburg.

Services will be on Saturday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Saturday 9:30 to 11:00 am.
