Gladys A. Long, 91, formerly of Hamburg, died Wednesday, January 16, 2013 in Phoebe Berks Healthcare Center, Wernersville. Gladys was a resident of Phoebe Berks Village. She was the wife of Floyd R. Long, who died September 1, 2003. They were married in June 1947
Born in Centre Twp., she was the daughter of the late Henry G. and Laura L. (Blatt) Spatz. Gladys was a graduate of the former Perry High School and a 1942 graduate of Kutztown State College. She also attended Duke University. Gladys first worked as an English teacher for Latrobe High School from 1942-1944. She then worked as an English teacher and Librarian for Hamburg High School from 1944 until retiring in 1972. Gladys was a member of Salem (Belleman's) Church, Centre Twp. She was a member of the Berks County Retired Teachers Association and the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. She was a former member of the Hamburg Senior Citizens. Gladys enjoyed playing cards both at home and while residing at Phoebe.
Gladys is survived by her sister: Sylvia L. (Spatz) Snyder, wife of James F. Wertz, Perry Twp.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters: Anna L. (Spatz) Heckman and Mildred L. (Spatz) Bucks.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport. Burial will be private in Fairview (Belleman's) Cemetery, Centre Twp. A visitation with the family will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, January 26, 2013 from 10:30 to 11:00 am.
