IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George H.
Bowers
January 5, 1939 – December 5, 2023
George H. Bowers, 84, of Hamburg, passed away in his residence on Tuesday, December 5, 2023. He was the husband of Jean M. (Berkheiser) Bowers. They were married on October 17, 1959 and celebrated sixty-four years of marriage.
Born in Windsor Twp., he was the son of the late George R.J. and Lillian (Rau-Auchey) Bowers. George was predeceased by all of his siblings: sisters Esther Kauffman, Mildred Shappell, Verna Rauch, Ruth Berg, Shirley Geiger and infant Betty; and brothers Arlan Bowers, Leon Bowers and Warren Bowers. He was also predeceased by his son: Timothy C. Bowers, died March 10, 2019.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Tina M. Bowers, Waynesboro; and Tracey L. (Bowers) Yeshulas, wife of Christopher P., Bern Twp.; five grandchildren: Aspen Lemus, wife of Erik; Tawnya Rush, wife of Ryan; Dr. Stormie Gough, wife of Taran; Trevor Bowers; and Christopher G. Yeshulas, husband of Tirzah; and 2.8 great-granddaughters: Catalina Rose Lemus, Luci Maeve Gough, and Layla Lily Lemus (due in January). George is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his fur baby Chloe.
George attended Hamburg High School, Class of 1956, but dropped out to join the Navy where he received his GED. He served five years in the U.S. Navy on the USS Valley Forge and was deployed during the conflict in the Suez Canal. George was a lifetime member of Union Fire Company No. 1, serving for over 50 years as a volunteer firefighter, chief officer and driver/operator. He also was a social member of the many other local fire companies. George was employed by Hahn Motors as a fire truck pipefitter until their closing. He later worked at Hood Inc. as a shipping/receiving clerk as well as a parts delivery person for NAPA Auto. He also worked for many years as a bartender in the Hamburg Fire Co. Social Quarters.
George enjoyed the beach, fishing, hunting, socializing with his fire company buddies and a nice glass of Windsor Canadian. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and most recently his great-granddaughters. George had a sarcastic sense of humor and was always the jokester and life of the party. He will be remembered by many for his "tormenting" and silly personality. George was rough on the outside by soft on the inside and loved by all who knew him.
It was George's wish to have no funeral or memorial service. Arrangements will be at the convenience of the family. The family requests that you remember him with a laugh and a smile or a good George story and a shot of Windsor Canadian. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to Union Fire Company No. 1, P.O. Box 255, Hamburg, PA 19526, as he was still fighting fires in his mind, with his nephew Jeffrey, up until his final breath.
Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Hamburg is in charge of arrangements.
