Gayle Elaine Christman, 78, of Hamburg, died Thursday, November 15, 2012 in the Laurel Center, Tilden Twp.
Born May 3, 1934 in Kutztown, she was the daughter of the late Peter S. and Gertrude E. (Reider) Sterner. She was married for thirty-one years to Paul G. Christman. Gayle graduated from Kutztown High School in 1952; Reading Business Institute in 1955; and Lehigh County Community College in 1981. She was employed by Kutztown State Teacher's College, Kutztown; Corvair Aeronaudics Corporation, San Diego, California; Leader East Retirement Center, Harrisburg; and last for the Reading Hospital and Medical Center as a physical therapist assistant, until retiring December 31, 1997.
Gayle was a member of the Reading Choral Society; The Hamburg Community Concert Choir; The Topton Lutheran Home Auxiliary; and The Hamburg Jr. Woman's Club, serving as community improvement chairperson, Secretary, Vice-President, and President. She was a faithful member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg, where she served as council Secretary for several years and volunteered on the Worship and Music committee. Gayle started two English Handbell Choirs and was a member on the vocal choir at church for many years. She taught vacation church school, organized and chaired the prayer chain committee and was a member of the Lay Eucharist Ministry at St. John's Lutheran Church. She also taught a Girl Scout Troop at St. John's. Gayle volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Welcome Wagon in Hamburg. She served on the advisory board of the Physical Therapy Assistant program at Alvernia College.
Gayle is survived by a daughter: Diane C. (Christman), wife of Richard R. Rothenberger, Jr.; two granddaughters: Allie L. Rothenberger; and Carly R. (Rothenberger), wife of Dan Weyandt; and a great-granddaughter: Olive Jane Weyandt. Other survivors include two sisters: Norma J. (Sterner) Berger; and Grace P. (Sterner) Folk; and Gayles' son-in-law: Scott Walter. Gayle was predeceased by a daughter: Jane Elizabeth (Christman) Walter, died January 13, 1996; three brothers: Charles F. Sterner; Peter O. Sterner; and William F. Sterner; a half-brother: Chester; and three sisters: Myrtle E. Boyer; Dorothy M. Rentschler; and Gloria R. Balthaser.
Services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 am from St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Kutztown. A viewing will be held on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg (off street parking in rear) and at the church Tuesday 9:30 to 10:30 am.
