Fr. Stephen J. Janos, 74, Centre Twp., passed away Saturday, August 7, 2021 in his residence. He was the husband of the late Matushka Suzanne E. (Plotar) Janos, passed away February 8, 2004.
Born in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Stephen J., Sr., and Anne (Marko) Janos. He graduated from Reading Central Catholic High School in 1965, continued his education at Villanova University receiving a bachelor's degree in Humanities, and later a master's degree in Philosophy. Father Janos later graduated from St. Vladimir Theological Seminary in New York. He was ordained on May 8, 1982 as a Russion Orthodox Priest, was an ArchPriest, and was awarded the "Palitza." In late 1990's, he translated 1500 pages from Russian of "Saint-Lives" which vastly expanded the extent of this material for english readers. He has in print over 10 books devoted to Russian Religious Philosophy, primarily of the noted Russian emigre philosopher, Nicholas Berdyaev. He retired on July 31, 2011.
He is survived by a son: Andrew M. Janos, husband of Bonnie L. (Kolvites) Janos, Herndon, VA; and two granddaughters: Madelynn and Jocelyn Janos.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street Leesport, PA 19533. There will be a Parastas service at 7:00 pm in the funeral home.
The family will be present at Sts. Peter & Paul Russian Orthodox Church, 45 Ideal Street, Buffalo, New York 14206, on Friday, August 13, 2021, at 6 PM where a Funeral Service for a Priest will be held at 6:30 PM.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held at Sts. Peter & Paul Russian Orthodox Church, 45 Ideal Street, Buffalo, New York 14206, on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at 10 AM.
Burial will follow at St. Matthew's Cemetery, West Seneca, New York.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for the establishment of the Berdyaev Society c/o Andrew Janos, 2400 William Street, Cheektowaga, New York 14206.
