Ernest M. Shappell, 88, of Ontelaunee Township died Tuesday, January 14, 2014 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was predeceased by his wife Doris L. (Dunkleberger) Shappell, died December 1994. Born in Shoemakersville, he was the son of the late Melvin and Edna Shappell. He was a class of 1942 graduate of Perry High School. Ernest was a marine veteran of WWII. He worked as a 4 mill operator at Carpenter Technology for 28 years, retiring in 1987. Ernest was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Leesport, Blandon Fire Company, and Temple Fire Company. Ernie is survived by a son: Daryl E. husband of Julia A. (Kerr) Shappell, Exeter Twp.; four grandchilren: Bo Shappell, West Chester, Ty Shappell, Exeter Twp., Alison DiSandro and Cheryl DiSandro, both of Exeter Twp. He is also survived by a brother Donald Shappell, Shoemakersville. Ernie was predeceased by a brother: Carl Shappell. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Pennsylvania Dialysis of Reading for their extraordinary care of Ernie over the past 10 years. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday January 18, 2014 at 1:30 PM in Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc. 223 Peach Street Leesport. A visitation with the family will be held in the funeral home from 12:30 to 1:30 PM.
