Obituary

Dr. Douglas Russell Macbeth, 82, of Reading, passed away Monday, April 7, 2025 in his residence. He was the husband of Phyllis E. (Shoecraft) Macbeth. They were married June 26, 1965 and celebrated 59 years of marriage.

Born in Johnson City, NY, he was the son of the late Robert G. and Doris M. (Carhart) Macbeth. He graduated from Harpursville High School (NY) in 1960; and continued his education at Cornell University, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Biology in 1964. Douglas furthered his education at Syracuse University where he achieved a Master's Degree in Science Education in 1965; and later a Doctorate from Penn State University in Curriculum and Instruction in 1971. Mr. Macbeth had a long career in education. He started his career as a Science Teacher in Norwich, NY City Schools in 1965; becoming an Instructor in Anatomy and Physiology at Penn State University in 1967; an instructor in Biology at Gwynedd-Mercy College in 1968; a science curriculum coordinator at Lewisburg Area School District 1971-1976; State Supervisor of Science and Environmental Education for the Delaware Department of Public Instruction 1976-1979; and was the Assistant Superintendent of Hamburg Area School District from 1979-2004. Dr. Macbeth served as an adjunct instructor at various institutions of higher education: Wilkes University, Penn State University, Albright College, and Alvernia University; until retirement. He was a life member of National Science Teachers Association, Pennsylvania ASCD for 24 years, where he served as treasurer, and Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators. He attended Salem-Berne United Methodist Church, Tilden Twp.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his children: David D. Macbeth, husband of Elaine M. (Worchick), Edenberg, Steven P. Macbeth, husband of Pamela L. (Scheffler), Hamburg, Jennifer S. Macbeth, companion of Douglas Dean, Estero, FL, and Kathleen E. (Macbeth) Baker, wife of Joseph, Estero, FL; grandchildren: Sarah Arend, Sinking Spring, Alyssa Macbeth, Coatesville, Benjamin, Natalie, Andrew, and Tanner Macbeth, all of Hamburg, Reed Macbeth, Jaxton Baker, and Cali Baker, all of Estero, FL; and his great-grandchildren: Ethan and Riley D'Amore, and another one on the way. He is also survived by a brother: William R. Macbeth, husband of Carmen, Boca Raton, FL; and a sister: Barbara (Macbeth) Dobrasz, wife of Alex, Lewiston, NY

A visitation will be held Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 10:00 to 11:30 am in Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street Hamburg, PA 19526 (off street parking in rear), with a memorial service following in Salem-Berne United Methodist Church, 292 Salem Church Rd., Hamburg, PA 19526. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to: Salem-Berne United Methodist Church, at the above address.
