Obituary

Dorothy E.J. (Markle) Kantner, "Dottie", 95, of Hamburg, died Friday, November 2, 2012 in St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Twp. She spent the past three months at Laurel Center, Hamburg and most recently resided at Hearthstone at Maidencreek. She was the wife of Harvey R. Kantner who passed away August 17, 1970.

Born in Tamaqua on January 13, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Ira F. and Cora L. (Rex) Markle. Dorothy's love of music grew throughtout her lifetime and she played keyboard in local bands including "Dottie and the Dukes" and "Sugar and Spice" in clubs and restaurants in Berks County. She was employed for many years in the garment industry in Tamaqua before moving to Hamburg. She retired in 1982 as a layout operator for Western Electric, Laureldale. Dorothy was a member of First United Church of Christ, Hamburg; the Organ Club of Berks Co.; and Western Electric Pioneers.

She is survived by a son: Robert F. Kantner, Sr., and his companion Maribeth Weaver, of Boyton Beach, Florida; and a daughter: Carol A. (Kantner), wife of M. Richard Biehl, Hamburg. Other survivors include nine grandchildren: Robert Kantner, Jr., and his wife Christine, Chapel Hill, NC; Sharon Kantner, Vass, NC; Bryan Kantner, and his wife Jane, Hyde Park, NY; Barry Kantner, and his wife Catherine, Gainesville, FL; Kimberly Kantner, Orlando, FL; Bradley Kantner, and his wife Andrea, Parkland, FL; Lori (Biehl), wife of Jeffrey Mergel, Bethlehem; Lisa (Biehl), wife of Kent Weidemoyer, Blandon; and Bradley Biehl, and his wife Heather, Blandon. There are also fourteen great-grandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased by her daughter-in-law: Shirley (Knoll) Kantner; her four younger brothers: Irvin, Wilbur, Gordon and Eugene Markle; and her three younger sisters: Eva Butler; Beatrice Martzen; and Bernice Rogers.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg.
