Obituary

Dorothy M. Bertschy, 76, of Hamburg, and formerly of Minersville, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2026. She was the wife of David W. Bertschy who passed away in 2010.

Dorothy was a kind, friendly, and loving person. She was, above all else, a caregiver.

Dorothy's journey started in the coal country of Minersville, Pennsylvania; the daughter of the late Clayton and Mary (Spirko) Carl. Longing for adventure and a way out of the almost guaranteed life of factory or coal work, she joined the Air Force. Her decision to join this branch of service was deeply personal, she stated, "I liked their uniforms the best".

In the service, Dorothy met her husband David in Russian linguistics school in Monterey, California. They married shortly thereafter and welcomed their son, Matthew. The military took the family to many wonderful places such as Japan and Germany. Another son, Adam, soon made an appearance when they were stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland. After the military, the family moved to several different locations across the USA. Longing to go home and take care of her mother, Dorothy and the family eventually migrated back to Pennsylvania.

To say her life was an adventure is an understatement. Dorothy was a school teacher, a waitress, a shoe store salesperson, and everything in between. Through it all, one thing became clear that defined Dorothy more than anything. She was the ultimate caregiver. Everything she did was for her family. Her needs were always secondary.

Dorothy is survived by her sons: Matthew R. Bertschy and Adam C. Bertschy; and granddaughters: Leah and Lydia.
