Donald I. Smith, 72, of Perry Twp., died Thursday, March 20, 2014, in his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Faye E. (Sonday) Smith. They were married on June 3, 1961 and celebrated 52 years of marriage.
Donald was born in West Reading on July 29, 1941 to the late Elton S. and Mildred M. (Davis) Smith. He was a 1959 graduate of Perry High School. Donald was a well-known painter and paper hanger in the area. He worked for forty-two years until retiring in 2009. He was a member of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was a former member of church council and the building committee. Donald was a member of the Zion's Cemetery Board; and life member of the Shoemakersville Fire Company. He enjoyed doing puzzles and was a fan of the Phillies.
Donald received a lot of enjoyment from farming and with his tractors. He also enjoyed building his cabin and spending time there.
Donald was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters: Karen L. (Smith), wife of Norman Manbeck, Tulpehocken Twp., Kimberly J. (Smith), wife of Russell Olszewski, Perry Twp.; and Patricia A. (Smith), wife of Luke Phillips, Windsor Twp.; seven grandchildren: Nathan Manbeck, and wife Kristen; Vanessa Hetrick, and husband Matthew; Stacey Didden, and husband Luke; Samuel and Timothy Olszewski; and Holly and Jacob Phillips; and four great-grandchildren: Nolan, Alyssa, and Elliott Manbeck; and Austin Hetrick. A fifth great-grandchild is expected in June. Donald is also survived by one sister: Bernice A. (Smith), wife of Richard Kase, Rockland Twp., one brother: Dennis R. Smith, and wife Beverly, Alsace Twp.; one niece: Debra, wife of Mike Noll; one nephew: Matthew Smith; mother-in-law: Dorothy Sonday, a resident at Berks Heim; and sister-in-law: Beverly Vandervort, and companion Steve Heller.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am from Zion's Ev. Lutheran Church, 354 Zion's Church Road, Shoemakersville, PA 19555. Burial will follow in Zion's Cemetery, Perry Twp. A visitation with the family will be held on Monday from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport; and Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the church.
