Obituary

Donald A. Miller, "Joe", 83, of Shoemakersville, died Monday, September 26, 2011 in St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Twp., where he was a patient since Sunday.

Born in Shoemakersville, he was the son of the late Clayton J. and Ella M. (Smith) Miller. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Joe first worked in knitting mills in Shoemakersville and Leesport. He then worked as a mail carrier for twenty years for the U.S. Postal Service, Shoemakersville, retiring in 1980.

Joe was a life member of the Shoemakersville Fire Company, where he was a former trustee, volunteer fireman, and barkeeper. He was a 50-year member of the Temple Fire Company and Goodwill Fire Company, Laureldale. He was a life member of the Perry Rod and Gun Club; and a member of the Northkill Rod and Gun Club, Bernville. Joe was also a life member of the Berks County Senior Citizens; member of the National Association of Letter Carriers; and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was an avid bowler and golfer.

Joe is survived by one daughter: Debra J. (Achenbach), wife of Lee R. Phillips, Upper Bern Twp.; one grandson: Dana Achenbach; and three great-grandchildren: Dakota, Kolby, and Ava Grace. Also surviving is one brother: Claude S. Miller, Mohrsville; and several nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by two brothers: Harry and Paul Miller; and one sister: Mayflower "Mazie" (Miller) Madeira.

Services will be on Friday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial with military honors will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Tuckerton. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Friday 10:00 to 11:00 am.
