Obituary

Delbert W. Berger, Sr., 88, of Hamburg, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 in Berks Heim where he resided since May 2010. He was the husband of Rita C. (Kuss) Berger, who died January 10, 1982.

Born in Blandon, he was the son of the late Charles and Mamie (Kunkle) Drybread. Delbert was a 1942 graduate of Perry High School. He was an outstanding athlete while in high school playing soccer, basketball and baseball. Delbert was invited to try-out as a catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. After graduation, he went to California for two years to work for PanAm as an airframe and power mechanic during the war.

Delbert first managed Horn's Diner in Shoemakersville from 1945-1976. He then owned and operated a Tidy Car Auto Detailing franchise in Shoemakersville from 1978 to 1986, at which time his son Richard took over the business, naming it Berger's Auto Detailing, located in Hamburg. Delbert's grandson Brook, currently owns and operates the three-generation business.

Delbert was a member of St. Luke's Church, Shoemakersville. He was a life member of Vaux Lodge #406

F. & A.M., Hamburg; life member of Perry Game Association; and life member of Shoemakersville Fire Company. Delbert enjoyed bowling, golfing, dancing, and watching the Phillies, Flyers, and Eagles. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in various sports activities.

Delbert is survived by two sons: Delbert W., Jr., husband of Pamela R. (Brackman) Berger, Sinking Spring; and Richard A., husband of Jean L. (Zechman) Berger, Lenhartsville; and one daughter: Janet L. (Berger), wife of David F. Keeney, Stokesdale, NC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and his companion for thirty-years: Grace A. (Naftzinger) Schlenker, with whom he resided in Hamburg.

Services will be on Tuesday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will follow in Laureldale Cemetery.
