Obituary

Clarence J. Kauffman, 98, of Leesport, died Monday, December 17, 2012 in St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Twp., where he was a patient since Thursday. He was the husband of Mabel M. (Field) Kauffman, who died October 17, 2009. Born in Muhlenberg Twp., he was the son of the late Luther B. and Mamie E. (Wagner) Kauffman. Clarence was a self-employed farmer on the family farm in Bern Twp. from 1945-1971. He also drove school bus for the Schuylkill Valley School District and Conrad Weiser School District from 1952 until retiring in 1984. Clarence was a member of Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, Leesport, where he was a former member, Past President and Assistant Secretary of the church council, serving various terms. He was honored at church in 1994 for his dedicated service. Clarence was a member of the Leesport Cemetery Board from 1960 until 2009, serving as President for six years. He was a member and Past President of the Blue Mountain Senior Citizens; and a life member of the Berks County Fireman's Association. Clarence was a life member and Past Master of the Ontelaunee Grange and was named Granger of the Year in 1992 for his volunteer work. Clarence served three terms on School Board, beginning at the Bern Township School and later after the jointure of the Schuylkill Valley School District. He was a former President of the Bern Township Board; and a former Vice-President of the Schuylkill Valley School District Board. Clarence is survived by two sons: Donald L., husband of Gerri L. (Latshaw) Kauffman, Leesport; and Irvin J., husband of Nettie A. (Latshaw) Kauffman, Bern Twp.; one daughter: Irene J. (Kauffman), widow of T. Perry Owings, Ronks, Lancaster Co.; six grandsons; fourteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sixth great-great-grandchild expected at the end of this month. He is also survived by one brother: Charles Kauffman, Laureldale; and one sister: Pauline (Kauffman) Bond, Leesport. Clarence was predeceased by two brothers: Elmer and William Kauffman; and four sisters: Annie (Kauffman) Hoffmaster; Mabel (Kauffman) Reeser; Stella (Kauffman) Strause; and Elsie (Kauffman) Stamm. Services will be on Friday at 11:00 am from Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 102 Apple Street, Leesport. Burial will follow in Leesport Cemetery. A viewing will be held in the church Friday 9:30 to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity Memorial Fund, P.O.
