Charles W. Savage, 96, formerly of Tilden Twp., died Saturday, April 12, 2014 in The Reading Hospital. He was taken there from Country Meadows, Wyomissing, where he resided since January 2011. Charles was the husband of Helen A. (Bagenstose) Savage, who died March 12, 1989.
Born in Tilden Twp., he was the son of the late Irvin S. and Lizzie M. (Lutz) Savage. Charles was a self-employed farmer until 1966. He then worked as a custodian at the Hamburg Area High School until 1983; and also drove school bus for the Hamburg Area School District for thirty-five years. Charles was a member of St. Michael's Church, Tilden Twp. He was also a life member of Reading-Berks AAA; and a member of Union Fire Company No.1 and beneficial association, Hamburg. Charles enjoyed gardening.
Charles is survived by four sons: Ronald E. Savage, and wife Doris, Mechanicsburg; Marvin R. Savage, and wife Barbara, Blandon; Dennis C. Savage, and wife Darlene, Centerport; and Nevin B. Savage, and wife Janet, Upper Bern Twp.; two daughters: Kathleen A., wife of James Groff, Bern Twp.; and Nancy L. Savage, wife of Richard Minetti, Newark, Delaware; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a sixteenth great-grandchild is expected. He was predeceased by a son: Kenneth R. Savage, who died in 1938; two brothers: George and Carl Savage; and two sisters: Verna Curtis and Grace Bingaman.
Services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am from St. Michael's Church, 529 St. Michael's Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Tilden Twp. A viewing will be held in the church Thursday 9:30 to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the St. Michael's Church Memorial Fund at the above address.
