IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles W.
Grim
August 8, 1922 – July 1, 2024
Charles "Charlie" W. Grim, 101, of Lititz, formerly of Hamburg, World War II Veteran, and Pearl Harbor Survivor, passed away Monday, July 1, 2024, at Luther Acres, Lititz.
Born in Hamburg, he was the son of the late Maurice D. and Mabel I. (Potteiger) Grim. Charlie graduated from Hamburg High School in 1940 and went on to enlist in the Navy. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Argonne during the attack. Charlie later transferred to the USS Bailey, where he spent four years, discharging at the rank of Chief Machinist's Mate. His service aboard the Bailey took him across the Pacific Ocean, from New Zealand to the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. After the war, he served in the Navy Reserve.
Following his service, Charlie worked as a quality control inspector at Burroughs Adding Machine Company, Downingtown, now known as Unisys, where he worked for 20 years before retiring. He was a member of Behler-Hein Post 637 American Legion, Hamburg; Wagner-Good Post No 216 VFW, Hamburg; The Tin Can Sailors; and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
Charlie was beloved by many friends and family for his kind and cheerful personality. He was a passionate listener of classical music, and often enjoyed reminiscing about his childhood in Hamburg and his family's music store there. Charlie also had a keen interest in automobiles, and was an avid cyclist until age 98.
Charlie was predeceased by his sister, Marie Rieser, niece Nancy L. Rieser, and nephew Thomas C. Rieser.
He is survived by cousins including Mary B. Kreider, Elverson; Kerry A. Grim, Hamburg; Bruce M. Grim, Tooele, UT; Kevin D. Grim, Conshohocken; Ellen R. Grim, Trondheim, Norway; and their families.
Charlie donated his archives relating to his service at Pearl Harbor and in the Pacific Theater to the Hamburg Area Historical Society so future generations may learn about his experiences.
Memorial Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Hamburg is in charge of arrangements. For online condolences, please visit www.leibenspergerfuneralhomes.com
