Bruce D. Riegel, 78, of Centre Township, passed away, after a very long good-bye, on March 3, 2016, at Berks Heim with family by his side. Son of the late Robert P. and Tama (Blatt) Riegel, he was born in Centre Township on August 14, 1937.
He was the husband of Florence Hardnele, formerly of Columbia, Lancaster County. They were married in Columbia on June 11, 1966, at St. John's Lutheran church and would have celebrated their 50th anniversay this year. Bruce was a deeply loved, and in return, dedicated family man, a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Bruce was a 1955 graduate of Ontelaunee High School. Upon graduation, he worked on the family farm and for the Berks Soil Conversation District. In 1963, he took over the family farm business upon his father's retirement. He also drove school bus for the Schuylkill Valley School District for a few years. In 1973, he decided to go into dairy farming. He designed and constructed a modern dairy facility. He continued in the dairy industry until 2001 when he retired. However, he continued farming the land of his farms and some neighboring farms until his illness forced him to stop in 2008.
A life-time member of St. Michael's Church, Tilden Township, Bruce served as a Deacon and as Consistory President for the former U.C.C. congregation prior to its consolidation with the Lutheran congregation. He served on the church's property committee, grounds committee and helped at picnics, dinners, and the Kutztown Folk Festival. He also served on St. Michael's Cemetery Board.
Bruce was a 60+ year member of the Grange at the local, county, state and national levels. As a young man, he served on the county drill team, and held several offices. He later served as Master of Centerport Grange prior to its merger with Ontelaunee Grange. Additionally, Bruce was a Charter member of the Central Berks Fire Company and served on the Centre Township Planning Commission.
In addition to his wife, Bruce is survived by three children: Timothy W. Riegel, husband of Deanna (Carlson), Sinking Spring; Tama (Riegel) E., wife of Brian K. Minnich, Nazareth, PA; Rebecca A. (Riegel), wife of George L. Watson, Muhlenberg Twp.; and twelve grandchildren: Caroline, James and Sarah Riegel; Andrew, Alicia, Luke, Logan, Julia, Jillian and Megan Minnich; and Samuel and Grant Watson. Bruce is also survived by sisters-in-law: Leah Riegel, widow of Ralph Riegel, Reading; June Riegel, widow of Robert S. Riegel, Reading; and Phyllis Miller, wife of Robert D. Miller, Lancaster. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his three brothers: Richard, Ralph and Robert Riegel.
