Betty Lou Herring, 79, of Lenhartsville, passed away November 17, 2013 in her residence. She was the wife of Irvin D. Herring.
Born in Allentown on August 6, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Harry L. and Marie V. (Gehringer) Kunkel. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg. Betty was also a member of the Scottish Rite Ladies Auxiliary of the Valley of Reading AASR. She had been employed by the Hamburg Area School District as Assistant Manager of the School Cafeteria, retiring in 1996 after twenty years of service. Betty was also employed as a waitress at the Virginville Hotel, retiring in 2011 after forty years of service.
Betty Lou and Irvin celebrated 58 years of marriage on October 22 by enjoying four days at her favorite vacation spot, Cape May, NJ with her niece and husband. Betty Lou's greatest joy in her life was taking her five grandchildren to dinner every Tuesday evening from the time they were small children up until last week before her passing.
Surviving in addition to her husband are one son: Leroy C., husband of Kim Herring, Hamburg; one daughter: Lori M., wife of Randy Dunkelberger, Hamburg; five grandchildren: Lauren, Matt, Chris, Tim, and Mike; two step-grandchildren: Jake and Hannah; and a great-granddaughter who is expected in December. Betty Lou is also survived by her half-sister: Mary Ann, wife of Carl Herring, Allentown; two nephews: Mike Herring and Steve Herring and his wife Sharon; and a niece: Sherry Ann, wife of Sterling Stump, Lenhartsville. She was predeceased by her brother: Donald Clauss.
Services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will follow in Dunkel's Cemetery, Greenwich Twp. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Thursday 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Friday 10:00 to 11:00 am.
