Obituary

Bernard J. Heckman, "Hap", 93, of Upper Bern Twp., passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 in Mifflin Center, Shillington. He was the husband of Ellen M. (Hoppes) Heckman, who died in 1996. Born in Hamburg, he was the son of the late Lester and Sadie (Yoder) Heckman. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Bernard worked as a molder for Confer and Smith. He then worked part-time for Yoder's Heating; and last worked for the Hamburg Area School District as a custodian. Hap was a member of Frieden's Church, Shartlesville. He was also a member of the Shartlesville Fish and Game Association. Hap enjoyed hunting and playing cards. Bernard is survived by a daughter: Dianna M. (Heckman), widow of Kermit D. Berger, Upper Bern Twp.; four grandchildren: Teresa, Joanne, Kelly and Aaron; and five great-grandchildren: Daniel, Thomas, Alexander, Audrey and Sarah. He was a brother to twin sister Bernice; sister Virginia; and brother Lawrence. Bernard was predeceased by his son: Allen J. Heckman. Services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 65 S. 4th Street, Hamburg (off street parking in rear). Burial will follow in Frieden's Cemetery, Shartlesville.
