Arthur H. Bortz, 91, of Lewes, Delaware and formerly of Hamburg, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 2, 2015 in Beebe Healthcare Medical Center, Lewes. He was the husband of Kathryn L. (Zettelmoyer) Bortz, to whom he was married to for sixty-seven years.
Born in Kutztown, he was the son of the late Harvey E. and Estella (Fritz) Bortz. Arthur was a 1941 graduate of Kutztown High School. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Arthur received his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1950; and received his teaching certification from Kutztown State Teacher's College in 1951.
Arthur was a Math and Science teacher for the Hamburg School District for six years. He then worked at Carpenter Technology, Reading, for twelve years; Kewecki Berylco, Tuckerton, for three years; and last worked for fifteen years for Spotts, Stevens and McCoy, Inc., Wyomissing, until retiring in 1987.
Arthur was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg, where he was a former member of church council. He was a former member and president of the Hamburg Area School District; member of the board of directors of the Reading Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers; member of the Hamburg Municipal Authority; and a member of Vaux Lodge #406 F. & A.M., Hamburg. Arthur was also a member of the Hamburg Game Association and the Keystone Social Club, Hamburg. He was an avid golfer; enjoyed bowling and playing cards; and loved to fish with his family and friends in various areas of Canada. For many years, Arthur enjoyed vacationing with family in Stone Harbor, NJ. Arthur was greatly loved and will be missed by many.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two beloved daughters: Laurie E. Bortz, Lewes, Delaware; and Jennie R. (Bortz), wife of Gary Gowans, Stone Harbor, New Jersey; and two grandsons: Gavin and Jerrid. Arthur was predeceased by three brothers: Carl, Harold, and Paul Bortz; and two sisters: Shirley Smith and Alice Schappell.
Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 am at Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., Hamburg (off street parking in rear). The funeral service will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg.
