Obituary

Arlene A. Spatz, 85, of Centerport, died Monday, December 19, 2011 in the Laurel Center, Tilden Twp., where she resided since February 19, 2006. Her husband, Daniel R. Spatz, died December 25, 2000. They were married on December 4, 1948.

Born in Bern Twp., she was the daughter of the late Howard S. and Emily M.C. (Schlappich) Burkey. She was a graduate of Perry High School and McCann School of Business, Reading. Arlene first worked for six years as a secretary for Shollenberger Farm Supply, Centerport. She then worked at her parent's floral business, Burkey's Florist, in Centerport from 1940-1961. Arlene and her husband then purchased the business in 1961, and operated Burkey's Flowers and Gifts in Centerport until 1974. From 1974 until 1990, she and her husband owned and operated the Leesport Market Restaurant. Arlene was a member of Salem (Belleman's) Church, Centre Twp. She served as financial secretary of Salem (Belleman's) U.C.C. Congregation from 1978-1988.

Arlene was a former secretary of the Borough of Centerport. She was a member of Central Berks Fire Company and beneficial association. She was one of the organizers of the Central Berks Fire Company Ladies Auxilliary in 1962; serving as first president from 1962-1967, and treasurer from 1968-1984. Arlene was a member of the Central Berks Lions Club; Centerport Union Sunday School; and Blue Mountain Chapter #443 Order of Eastern Star, Hamburg. She was also a former member of the Centerport Band from 1940-1955.

Arlene is survived by one son: Rev. Barry L., husband of Carol A. (Geisinger) Spatz, Fredericksburg, Berks Co.; and two grandsons: Matthew L., husband of Meagen (Sorensen) Spatz, Manville, NJ; and Sgt. Phillip M., husband of Kadi (Watson) Spatz, Quantico, VA. She was predeceased by one son: Arden A. Spatz, died March 15, 1953.

Services will be on Friday at 11:00 am from Salem (Belleman's) Church, 3540 Belleman's Church Road, Mohrsville, with Rev. Bruce W. Potteiger officiating. Burial will be in Fairview (Belleman's) Cemetery, Centre Twp. A viewing will be held in the church Friday 9:30 to 11:00 am.
