Albert W. Burkevage, Sr., 93, of Centre Twp., died Sunday, December 8, 2013 in VA Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre. He was the husband of Florence M. (Wierzbicki) Burkevage, who died March 19, 2002.
Born in Lost Creek, Schuylkill County, he was the son of the late Stanley and Eva (Gibas) Burkevage. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Albert worked as a meat cutter for thirty-two years for Armour and Co., Reading, until 1972. He was a school bus driver for the Schuylkill Valley School District for seventeen years until 1990. Albert also owned and operated the family farm in Centre Twp. He was a member of Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was chairman of the Centre Twp. Board of Supervisors for twelve years. Albert was a member of the Polish Falcons; Central Berks Fire Company and relief association, Centerport; Hunter's Haven hunting camp in Sullivan Co.; Berks Co. Farmers Association; and Pennsylvania Farm Bureau.
Albert is survived by one son: Albert W. Burkevage, Jr., and his wife Maryann, Centerport; daughter: Shirley Ann, wife of Gerald Wertz, Lehigh Acres, Florida; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Albert was predeceased by his eight brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 am from Holy Guardian Angels R.C. Church, 3121 Kutztown Road, Reading, PA 19605. Burial with military honors will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport and Saturday 9:00 to 10:00 am at the church.
