Obituary for Richard W. White

Richard William White, 93, of Hingham, Massachusetts, died on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Linden Ponds Retirement Community in Hingham.
Mr. White was born in 1924 in Pottsville, the son of the late William A. and Mary H. (Clauser) White. He graduated from Pottsville High School. His attendance at Bucknell University was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army with the 83rd Infantry during World War II. Richard resumed his education after the war at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1950. After becoming a registered Architect in Pennsylvania, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and pursued academic studies in Paris during the 1954-55 academic year. Upon return, Richard enrolled at MIT. In addition to receiving a Voorhees, Walker Smith and Smith Research Fellowship, he graduated with a Master's degree in City Planning in 1957.
Remaining in New England, Richard worked at The Architects Collaborative and the Boston Redevelopment Authority, before beginning his own private practice. He also taught design at Mt. Ida College in Newton, MA, as well as at the Boston Architectural Center.
Richard is survived by several cousins. Other close relatives include the son and daughter of his deceased cousin, Mary Schappell: William Schappell of Shoemakersville; and Helen Hopple of Bloomsburg; and their respective families.
