Obituary for Jon D. Hoey

Jon D. Hoey, 76, of Upper Tulpehocken Twp., PA, went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at Laurel Center, Tilden Twp., where he resided for a short time. Jon was the husband of Gale E. (Driscoll) Hoey. They were married June 22, 1968, and celebrated 53 years of marriage last June. She was the love of his life.

Born in Woodbury, NJ, Jon was the son of the late William H. and Laura B. (Moore) Hoey. He graduated from Overbrook Regional High School, Lindenwold, NJ, in 1964 and earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Delaware in 1968 and a Master's Degree from Grace Theological Seminary in 1978. He also studied in the doctoral program at Trinity Theological Seminary. Jon was a teacher, school administrator, chaplain and pastor before working 21 years as a missionary with the North American Mission Board. He spent most of his adult lifetime leading mission trips to sites in North America, Central America and the Caribbean and counted many of the people he met there as family.

Jon was an athlete and coached many sports over the years. He had a great sense of humor and was known for telling puns. He loved to sing, especially hymns and Johnny Matthis tunes. He enjoyed history and took his family on many trips to noteworthy sites. He loved animals; dogs were his favorite. Jon was always happy to eat something tasty but preferred anything chocolate washed down with a diet Dr. Pepper. Most of all, Jon loved his family and he lived to serve the Lord. He was known for engaging any person he met in a spiritual discussion and was eager to tell anyone about Jesus.Upon retiring to Pennsylvania, he became a member of St. Thomas Church, Bernville, Pa.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Kathy F. (Hoey) Wolfe, Ashland, OH, and Kolleen S. (Hoey) Long, wife of David, Lenhartsville, PA. He has five living grandchildren: Rebekah (Wolfe) Alhussainy, wife of Hussein; Abigale Coomes, wife of Justin; Aaron Jacob Wolfe; Ethan Long; and Gracie Long. He is also survived by a brother: William Douglas Hoey, husband of Toni, Ephrata, PA. He was predeceased by a daughter: Debra Gale Hoey.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at 11am at St. Thomas Church, 536 N. Main Street Bernville, PA. Burial is private in St. Thomas Cemetery, Bernville.
