Obituary for James T. Sweeney Jr.

James T. Sweeney, Jr., "Jim" passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2023 in Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Twp., after a 9 month battle with cancer. He was the husband of Joy J. (Jonathan) Sweeney. They were married March 6, 1976 and celebrated 47 years of marriage.

Born in Pottsville, he was the son of the late James T. Sweeney, Sr., and Mary Louise (Portland) Sweeney. He graduated from Pottsville High School, 1973; attended one year at Massanutten Military Academy, in Virginia; and later received a Bachelor's Degree from Bloomsburg University in 1978. Jim was. a member of St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, Reading. He worked for over 40 years as a human resources manager for Exide Technologies, retiring in January 2022. Jim was a member of the historical societies of both Schuylkill County and Leesport. He had been a referee and umpire for both basketball and youth baseball. He was a current member of the Leesport Sewer Authority and Planning Commission. He was an avid golfer and Philadelphia sports fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children: Amy J. (Sweeney) Williams, wife of Frederick Michael, Marietta, PA; James T. Sweeney, III, "Jimi", Pottstown; and Amanda B. Sweeney, Chicago; four grandchildren: Simone Joy Williams, Gaia Margaret Sweeney, Eli Michael Williams, and Luna Joie Sweeney. He is also survived by three sisters: Kathleen Sweeney, Mechanicsburg, Mary Ann Sweeney, wife of Thomas Hanrahan, Culver City, CA, and Alice Sweeney, wife of Keary Yenser, Leesport. He was predeceased by two brothers: Joseph and Christopher Sweeney.

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 10:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street Leesport. A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 am in the funeral home.
