Obituary for Goldy A. Spayd (Bricker)

Goldy A. Spayd, 95, of Hamburg and formerly of Leesport, passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 in Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center. She was the wife of James F. Spayd, Sr., who died August 20, 1992.
Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Bessie (Keppley) Bricker. Goldy was a 1943 graduate of Reading High School. She first worked as a clerk at Pomeroy’s; and then for Diener’s Knitting Mill. Goldy and her husband owned and operated James Spayd Grocery in Leesport for nine years. She also worked in the cafeteria at the Ontelaunee school. Goldy last worked as a clerk at the Leesport Post Office until retiring in 1988. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Leesport for seventy years, where she was president and treasurer of the Women’s Guild. Goldy loved singing in the church choir and had a beautiful alto voice. She was a member of the Leesport Senior Citizens where she would run the casino trips; the Shoemakersville Senior Citizens; and the Perry Game Association, where she ran the lunch counter and was notorious for leading rumpsch card games. Goldy was a charter member of the American Legion Unit 906 Auxiliary of Leesport which began in 1947. She was also on the Leesport election board for many years. Goldy enjoyed playing cards and games with her family and friends.
Goldy is survived by her daughter-in-law: Susan J. (Rickenbach) Spayd, State College; two grandchildren: James F. Spayd, III; and Pamela R. (Spayd), wife of Karl Shellenberger; and three great-grandchildren who lovingly called her Go-Go: Brooke, Ian and Logan. She is also survived by a niece: Goldy Williams, Temple; and a nephew: Barry Gable, Blandon. Goldy was predeceased by her son: James F. Spayd, Jr., who died October 5, 2000; two brothers: Nevin A. and Byron A. Bricker; and two sisters: Bernice Damato and Vera Gable.
Services will be held on Monday, July 19 at 11:00 am from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport. Burial will follow in Leesport Cemetery.
