Obituary for David A. Stambaugh

David Allan Stambaugh, 76, of Strausstown, passed away peacefully in his residence with family by his side on Tuesday, August 23, 2022. He was the husband of Suzanne L. (Fritch) Stambaugh. They were married on August 19, 1967 and recently celebrated fifty-five years of marriage.
Born in West Reading, he was the son of the late Edgar A. and Ella A. (Himmelberger) Stambaugh. Dave was a 1963 graduate of Hamburg Area High School. He also graduated from Wesley College and West Virginia Wesleyan College. Dave was a teacher for thirty-eight years; first teaching French and Spanish in Duncannon; and then teaching English at Hamburg Area High School, retiring in 2004. He also operated Strausstown Fur Shop with his brothers; delivered the Reading Eagle for forty years; and drove school bus in the Tulpehocken and Hamburg Area School Districts for Eshelman Transportation. Dave was a member of The Bridge Church, Hamburg. Dave had a distinguished athletic and coaching career, beginning in high school. He was 1st Team All County for Hamburg Area High School baseball and a 4 year letter winner. He was starting pitcher for the PA American Legion State Champions in 1963; 4 year letter winner at West Virginia Wesleyan College, setting a school record of 18 strikeouts in a single game; 1965 Scholar Athlete of the Year; and had 882 career strikeouts and 111 career wins with the Lebanon Valley Baseball League. Dave was the coach for the Hamburg Area High School varsity baseball and soccer teams. He set a school record for 375 varsity baseball career victories; and 69 career wins for the boys varsity soccer team. Dave coached the varsity baseball team to two county championships in 1978 and 1989 and was named Berks County Coach of the Year for those years. He had a 32 year career record of 306-274-1; and celebrated an undefeated season in 1978. Dave was inducted into the Hamburg Area High School Sports Hall of Fame. Dave enjoyed going to the races at Big Diamond on a Friday night.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three children: Paige S. (Stambaugh), wife of Christopher B. Jarecki; Chad D. Stambaugh, husband of Michele R. Heckman; and Shannon A. (Stambaugh), wife of David B. Nabozny; seven grandchildren: Cory A. Stambaugh; Kayla C. Schaeffer; Courtney E. Stambaugh; Kyra A. Reimert; Aaron D. Nabozny; Evin D. Heckman; Katrina M. Heckman; and three great-grandchildren: Landyn N. Walters; Kaycee C. Schaeffer; and Bentley L. Schaeffer. Dave is also survived by his siblings: Harvey C. "Chick" Stambaugh, widower of Patricia L. (Wilhelm) Stambaugh; Dennis A. Stambaugh, husband of Kathryn; and Jane (Stambaugh), wife of Roy Bubbenmoyer; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law and Dennis's wife: Patricia A. (Kessig) Stambaugh.
Services will be held on Saturday at 3:00 pm from The Bridge Church, 3561 Old 22, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will be held in the church Saturday 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
